THE NUMBERS

According to newly available Live+3 and Live+7 ratings data, CBS’ broadcast of “The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” last month garnered the awards show its best overall audience of any telecast since CBS began carrying the ceremony exclusively in 2020.

Compared to its initial Live+Same Day performance, which saw this year’s telecast averaging 2.917 million viewers, “The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” gained an additional +278,000 viewers after three days of delayed viewing, bringing the Live+3 Day figure to 3.195 million viewers. After seven days, the telecast increased again, adding another +21,000 viewers for a total of 3.216 million who tuned into this year’s ceremony.

This year’s broadcast marks the best overall performance for the Daytime Emmy Awards since CBS aired “The 38th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” on Sunday, June 19, 2011. That year’s ceremony averaged 5.49 million viewers and marked the final time the awards show aired on broadcast television before CBS agreed to air it again in 2020. In the intermittent years, the ceremony was either televised on cable via HLN and Pop TV or over the Internet.

Despite the increase in Total Viewers after three and seven days of delayed viewing, the awards show remained steady with its Live+Same Day performance among the key sales demographics, particularly among Adults 18-49, where the ceremony attracted a 0.25 rating.

Factoring in both three and seven days of delayed viewing, the Daytime Emmys pulled a 0.13 rating in Adults 18-34, a 0.39 rating in Adults 25-54, a 0.27 rating in Women 18-49 and a 0.24 rating in Men 18-49. Of the key rating categories, only Men 18-49 saw an increase from Live+Same Day (0.24 rating vs. 0.23 rating). Meanwhile, of the 3.216 million viewers who tuned in, the ceremony averaged 335,000 viewers among Adults 18-49.

Based on data published by Programming Insider via Nielsen, this year’s Daytime Emmys outperformed the 2020 telecast in Live+3, which averaged 3.164 million viewers after just three days of delayed viewing. An additional +149,000 viewers watched the awards show that year on a delay compared to its initially reported Live+Same Day average (3.164 million vs. 3.015 million). Comparatively, the 2020 awards show averaged 3.193 million viewers in Live+7, an increase of just +29,000 viewers from its Live+3 performance.

As previously reported, the improved ratings performance for the Daytime Emmy Awards comes just as CBS and The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) prepare to discuss whether to continue their exclusive broadcast partnership, which includes the 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 telecasts. This year’s ceremony saw CBS broadcast the Daytime Emmy Awards for a record 18th time, the most of any television network.
